Fifty Barrels Winery

Wine lovers rejoice

Fifty Barrels Winery comes to downtown Vista

fifty barrels

Fifty Barrels is a grassroots, urban winery in downtown Vista, featuring handmade, artisan wines from California’s finest grapes. Brian Vitek & Brent Wells have been making wine since 1999 and have answered the demands of the labels followers and decided to increase production of their popular brand. This required moving from their prior coastal location, to the new larger space on Main Street and immersing themselves in the community of Vista.  General manager Denise Wells says ”the move was the right choice and our daily encounters with fellow business  owners, new clientele and residents  have made us feel especially welcome.”

Talented Students of Art

Vusd artThe 10th annual VUSD Festival of the Arts will feature art booths from every campus in the Vista Unified School District, as well as performances by more than 20 student groups performing on three outdoor stages. The festival, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, will be staged on Main Street, which will be blocked off in front of the Krikorian movie theater, according to founding organizer Anne Fennell, a teacher at Mission Vista High School.

Fennell said last year’s event had more than 1,000 pieces of student art on display and drew a crowd of more than 5,000. She’s hoping for an even bigger turnout this year.

The highlight will be a choir performance at 12:30 p.m. featuring more than 300 students from different campuses. Among the scheduled groups are middle and high school jazz and folkloric dance troupes, show bands, a steel drum ensemble, the Drumming Dragons, guitar and wind ensembles, choirs and theater troupes. pam.kragen@utsandiego.com

Scottish Highland

san diego scottish highland games

When celebrating in times of peace one of the Highlanders’ favorite pastimes was    the tainchel. For these “great hunts” very often several clans would combine. Chieftains    would send word to the clansmen that such an event was planned and when and where    they should assemble.

After a successful hunt a great feast and celebration would be held. Then the rival    clansmen would test each other’s prowess at various sports – running, jumping, wrestling,  or primitive forms of weight putting with stones, or divided into roughly equal sides  vying against each other in a very early form of camanachd or shinty. Lastly the    clansmen would vie with each other in piping and in dancing, the pipers taking it    in turns to demonstrate their skills and the clansmen to demonstrate their agility    and neatness of movement by dancing complicated steps to the pipe music. These relaxations   were in effect the forerunners of the modern Highland games.

Great family fun come out and see for yourself
