Fifty Barrels Winery

Wine lovers rejoice

Fifty Barrels Winery comes to downtown Vista

fifty barrels

Fifty Barrels is a grassroots, urban winery in downtown Vista, featuring handmade, artisan wines from California’s finest grapes. Brian Vitek & Brent Wells have been making wine since 1999 and have answered the demands of the labels followers and decided to increase production of their popular brand. This required moving from their prior coastal location, to the new larger space on Main Street and immersing themselves in the community of Vista.  General manager Denise Wells says ”the move was the right choice and our daily encounters with fellow business  owners, new clientele and residents  have made us feel especially welcome.”

Fifty barrels is a fully functioning production facility, handling everything on site. The bulk of their red grapes come from Paso Robles and white grapes are sourced from all over California. They welcome guests to come and watch or help any time during production activities.

Art design

Fifty Barrels encourages local artists to create art on the barrel heads, paint one and you receive a gift of a bottle of wine. fifty wine

Aubudon Birdhouse Entry & Auction

Buena Vista Aubudon Society

birdhouse auction 2014

The Buena Vista Audubon Society is soliciting donations of signature birdhouses, bat-houses and birdfeeders for our 4th Annual Birdhouse Auction to be held 2/22/2014 from 5-8:00pm. Last year’s event was a blast. We had over 100 unique and beautiful birdhouses up for auction, and every one of them sold. This year we will feature live music, great food and drink and both silent and live auctions. This year’s live auction will once again be led by guest auctioneer, Martha Barnette of KPBS’s “A Way With Words.”

Entries may be decorative or functional and can be submitted by teams or individuals. Prizes will be awarded for the top three vote getters. A limited number of undecorated birdhouses are available for $8.00 to help you get started. The use of sustainable, recycled and re-purposed materials is encouraged. All proceeds benefit the Buena Vista Audubon Society, an all volunteer, non-profit 501(3)(c) corporation dedicated to fostering an appreciation for the plants and animals of our community. Last year volunteers at the BVAS Nature Center hosted classes about nature and the environment for over 4,000 local schoolchildren. Applications can be found online at http://www.bvaudubon.org/

Merry Christmas

Christmas trees around the world

The Capitol Christmas tree in Washington , D.C.

Schoolchildren. Encircling evergreens in the ‘Pathway of Peace’ represent the
50 U.S. States.

xmas2The world’s largest Christmas tree display rises
up the slopes of Monte Ingino outside of Gubbio, in Italy ‘s Umbria region.
Composed of about 500 lights connected by 40,000 feet of wire, the ‘tree’ is a
modern marvel for an ancient city

Venice ‘s Murano Island renowned throughout the

Sculpted by master glass blower Simone Cenedese, the artistic Christmas tree is

Moscow celebrates Christmas according to the
Russian Orthodox calendar on Jan. 7. For weeks beforehand, the city is alive
with festivities in anticipation of Father Frost’s arrival on his magical
troika with the Snow Maiden. He and his helper deliver gifts under the New Year
tree, or yolka, which is traditionally a fir.

The largest Christmas tree in Europe (more than

Thousands of lights adorn the tree, adding to the special enchantment of the

‘Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree’: Even in
its humblest attire, aglow beside a tiny chapel in Germany ‘s Karwendel

xmas 9Ooh la Galeries Lafayette!  In Paris, even the
Christmas trees are chic. With its monumental, baroque dome, plus 10 stories of

The twelve days of Christmas….. what do
leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who
won’t come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?

read on……

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice
their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism
song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning
plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in
the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could
remember.

-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.-

-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the
Old Testament.

-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy
Spirit–Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation,
Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit–Love, Joy, Peace,
Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness,
Gentleness, and Self Control.

-The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the
Apostles’ Creed.

Merry Christmas Everyone,

Peace, Love and Joy to you today and in the new year

Talented Students of Art

Vusd artThe 10th annual VUSD Festival of the Arts will feature art booths from every campus in the Vista Unified School District, as well as performances by more than 20 student groups performing on three outdoor stages. The festival, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, will be staged on Main Street, which will be blocked off in front of the Krikorian movie theater, according to founding organizer Anne Fennell, a teacher at Mission Vista High School.

Fennell said last year’s event had more than 1,000 pieces of student art on display and drew a crowd of more than 5,000. She’s hoping for an even bigger turnout this year.

The highlight will be a choir performance at 12:30 p.m. featuring more than 300 students from different campuses. Among the scheduled groups are middle and high school jazz and folkloric dance troupes, show bands, a steel drum ensemble, the Drumming Dragons, guitar and wind ensembles, choirs and theater troupes. pam.kragen@utsandiego.com
